Simpler Times

If you had a chance to go back in time would you do it? I would love to go back to the beginning of the tech boom and lock all those idiots in the same room on a freighter headed to nowhere. Life would be so much easier if we all didn’t need the newest gadget, phone, tablet, earbuds etc. I miss just going for a drive and not having to worry about whether or not the computer chip in my car is going to short circuit and leave me stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Simpler times, no worrying about what you are eating not having some wanna be expert telling you that what you are eating will kill you. No drug company pushing their drugs on television where the side effects are worse than what you were taking the drug for, to begin with. Simpler times meant Joe Namath was passing the football on television for the New York Jets instead of hawking some medicare selection. Simpler times was only having 3 or 4 channels on the television and the station signed off at midnight with the National Anthem and then the television station went to showing either a test pattern or just snow(fuzz) till 6 am when the station signed back on for the day.

Simpler times meant families got together more often, sat out in the backyard in aluminium lawn chairs, drinking sweet tea and throwing horse shoes while the Barbecue was sizzling on the grill. Simpler times meant gasoline was fairly cheap and families who went on vacation yearly hoped they always had enough gas in the car when it got dark as the majority of the filling (gas) stations closed at 9 pm and if you ran out of gas, you just slept in your car till the next day and hoped someone would stop and give you a little gas to get you to the next filling station. Simpler times meant no air conditioner in the family car so by the time you got to where you were going you were almost deaf from the wind noise.

My simpler times took me to places like Gulfport, MS where we stayed in a roadside motel the year before hurricane Camille roared through the area and wiped most of the town off the map. A trip to an old fort out into the gulf made you wonder if it was still there 53 years later or if Camile had washed it away as well. My simpler time took me to Jacksonville, FL where my cousins had moved to. A trip to St. Augustine and the old jail, a trip to Silver Springs where Sea Hunt was filmed & a Rattlesnake show that made my mother scream (she was pregnant with my brother at the time), to me getting to hold a 6ft long Black Indigo snake. I have always liked snakes. To the magical trip to Walt Disney World which at the time really did seem like a step into another world. I went to Disney 7 times before Epcot opened and I haven’t ever been back.

Simpler times meant when it did actually snow in Little Rock, AR that my mother and I would get bundled up in whatever clothes that could help us stay warm and walk through the quietness of the winter night.
